USC’s football season came to an abrupt end over the weekend, with the Trojans deciding to go home early rather than go bowling after Friday’s Pac-12 title game loss to Oregon.
While the decision to not isolate for the next two weeks for a meaningless exhibition is understandable, the end of USC’s season could mean that we experienced the last game of several Trojans’ college careers without knowing it.
This is an unusual year. With every player being granted an extra year of eligibility, all seniors must decide if they want to return to school or go pro. Some, like receiver Tyler Vaughns, have already indicated they plan to turn pro, while others will need to mull over their options.
But there are also several underclassmen who could leave USC this year for the NFL Draft, especially after the way they performed in 2020. Here’s a look at the candidates to leave USC early for the next level:
Nick Figueroa, defensive line
Of the people on this list, Figueroa is the most likely to return to USC for 2021. But the redshirt junior had a breakout year in his second season with the Trojans, leading the team in sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss (7.0) while showing the versatility to play multiple positions up front. So the question becomes, is this as high as his draft stock will get? Or is returning to USC the right move to continue to improve as he finishes his college career?
Talanoa Hufanga, safety
This was Hufanga’s year to show what he could do when fully healthy, and he did just that. The junior led USC with 62 tackles, recorded three sacks and forced two fumbles. He went from zero career interceptions to four in a four-game span. Hufanga and USC’s safeties were tasked with being the leaders of the new-look defense under coordinator Todd Orlando and Hufanga rose to the challenge and showed what a game-changing talent he can be, at this level and the next.
Isaiah Pola-Mao, safety
Like Hufanga, Pola-Mao accepted the new responsibilities bestowed upon USC safeties this year, earning the job of team captain prior to the season. He recorded 40 tackles and proved to have a nose for the ball with five passes defended and three fumble recoveries. Pola-Mao represents the third generation of his family to play at USC, and could follow his uncle Troy Polamalu’s footsteps to the NFL.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, wide receiver
The former Mater Dei standout said he never considered leaving school prior to the season for the NFL Draft, but St. Brown will have to heavily consider that option now. The junior spent his first two seasons with Michael Pittman Jr. serving as USC’s No. 1 receiver. But after Pittman graduated, St. Brown got the chance to flourish. He had two 100-yard performances the first two weeks of the season, then scored seven touchdowns across USC’s last three games, including a record-breaking four-TD first quarter against Washington State.
Marlon Tuipulotu, defensive tackle

There were preseason concerns after Jay Tufele opted out, but Tuipulotu filled in admirably at defensive tackle with two sacks, a forced fumble and 3.5 tackles for loss. He has the chance to declare early after this year’s performance, should he choose to take it.
Alijah Vera-Tucker, offensive tackle
This is the surest bet of the lot. Vera-Tucker originally did declare early and leave school before learning the Pac-12 was moving its season back from the spring to the fall. By playing, he confirmed his status as one of the top offensive linemen in the coming draft class.
