Tips from the public led officers to arrest a man suspected of being the driver who fatally struck a 68-year-old pedestrian and drove away in St. Paul, police said Wednesday.
During the course of the investigation into the death of John Benjamin, police identified Robert Wilson Kinney Jr., 57, as the suspect, according to the police department.

Police took Kinney into custody at his Maplewood residence on Tuesday night and he is being held in the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation. Officers also found the vehicle suspected of being involved at Kinney’s home.
Benjamin — who was deaf, didn’t drive and walked many places — was struck by the driver of a vehicle shortly before 8:40 p.m. Friday at Margaret Street and McKnight Road. He lived in the area.
“This was a case where many people helped to find the person responsible,” said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman. “… When this case began, investigators only had car debris to work with that was located in the road where John Benjamin was killed. They took that debris to car care professionals who identified the color, make, model and possible years of the possible suspect vehicle that it belonged to.”
On Monday, police released information, saying a platinum gray passenger-side exterior mirror left at the scene was likely from a Chevrolet Malibu with a model year between 1997 and 2003. They asked anyone with information to call police and Ernster said they received tips that led to Kinney’s arrest.

Rick Riley, a friend of Benjamin’s, was relieved to hear about the arrest because, he said, “You can’t go on like that and just forget it and let it go.”
“I think this whole situation is sad — nobody wins in this thing, everybody loses,” Riley added.
Kinney lives about one and a half miles from the location where Benjamin was struck. Minnesota court records show he was convicted of driving under the influence in 1996 and 2005, both in Washington County. He hadn’t had a criminal case in Minnesota since then.
